Threats from NY Attorney General? | CNN

Former Goldman Sachs Chairman John Whitehead said Thursday that New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer threatened him during an April phone call after Whitehead wrote an op-ed piece critical of Spitzer's attacks against American International Group's Maurice "Hank" Greenberg......

In his op-ed piece Thursday, headlined "Scary," Whitehead offered what he said was a transcript of Spitzer's statements:

"Mr. Whitehead, it's now a war between us and you've fired the first shot. I will be coming after you. You will pay the price. This is only the beginning, and you will pay dearly for what you have done. You will wish you had never written that letter," Whitehead wrote Thursday......

On April 22, Whitehead wrote an op-ed piece for the Journal titled "Mr. Spitzer Has Gone Too Far," where he argued Spitzer had aired damaging allegations against Greenberg before proving them in court. Greenberg, who ran the world's largest insurance company for four decades, and Whitehead are long-time associates.

"Something has gone seriously awry, when a state attorney general can go on television and charge one of America's best CEOs and most generous philanthropists with fraud before any charges have been brought, before the possible defendant has even had a chance to know what he personally is alleged to have done, and while the investigation is still under way," Whitehead wrote in April.......

During a nationally televised interview in April, Spitzer made allegations against Greenberg and AIG.

"The evidence is overwhelming that these were transactions created for the purpose of deceiving the market," Spitzer said. "We call that fraud. It is deceptive. It is wrong. It is illegal."

Whitehead in his April op-ed piece objected, "it is neither proper nor fair, and may be a violation of ethics, for a prosecutor to publicly air such charges under these circumstances."

Greenberg recently has mounted a campaign to restore his reputation, and is reaching out to a wide network of rich and politically connected friends to help his cause......
